What is ESI Scheme?
The ESI Scheme is a complete social security and health insurance scheme designed with an objective to protect the employees & workers covered under this scheme during various financial miseries arising out of events of sickness, maternity, disablement, death, and to provide improved and required medical care to the employees and their respective families. This scheme is devised to mitigate the financial and medical distress arising out of such severe risks.
 
Esi Registration Applicability:
The Scheme is applicable to:
  • A organization located in an area to which the State Government allow to cover the scheme
  • Under Section 2(12), the Act is applicable to established factories and firms having employee strength of 10 or more persons
Shops, hotels, restaurants, and cinemas can be covered under the scheme as they employ more than 15 staffs and having an ultramodern infrastructure. Under section 1(5) of the Act, this scheme can be extended to private medical and educational institutions. The minimum wage limit for the applicability of this Act is Rs. 15,000/- per month.
 
ESI registration procedure as per the provisions of the ESI Act:
In order to become coverable under the act, it is essential for an employer to make ESI registration online and get registered. Online registration seeks authentic, genuine and precise details of the employer so they need to be ready for it. If the employer wishes to register manually, then he/she has to submit registration form (Form -01) to the concerned regional office and get the code number. Email for communicating would be the mode of contact to the employer in the case of any emergency or requirement. Once the employer gets registered, he/she will be given with a 17 digit employer code. Rules are slightly different for the employers that supply man power to companies. Except these employers, other employers can proceed and get all the processes done online. They are allowed to register the strength of employees, fill periodical returns, fill contribution and generating challan for remitting contribution online. Address proof like pan card / voter identity card/ passport, month wise employment position are the some of the essential documents asked by the corporation.
 
How does the Scheme Helps Employees'?
The scheme provides a comprehensive medical and financial care to the employees registered under the scheme during the period of recovery from the health distress. This scheme compensates the loss of employees’ wages during the period of his absence from work due to sickness, maternity and disablement. Employees’ family members also get equal medical and sickness benefits of this scheme.
 
Who governs the ESIC scheme?
The ESI Scheme is controlled and governed by a corporate body called the 'Employees State Insurance Corporation' (ESIC). This corporation consists of members representing the employees, employers, the central & state government, the parliament and medical professional. The Chief Executive Officer is the Director General of the corporation.
